Synopsis
In Mumbai, nurse Prabha’s routine is interrupted when she receives an unexpected gift from her ex-husband. Her younger roommate, Anu, tries in vain to find a place in the city to be intimate with her boyfriend. The first Indian film to be screened in Cannes competition in 30 years. Watching this film at its premiere in Cannes was one of the highlights. The film depicts the intertwined female relationships that exist in the fast-paced, humid city of Mumbai. What Payal and Ranabir achieved with the visuals and color grading blew me away. What I loved most was the poetic evocation of the monsoon in the sweet moments of relief from the heat, but also the hardships that accompany the storm. We feel the characters’ journey of self-discovery, as they struggle against the suffocating confines of our traditional culture and in turn replace it with the newness and hope that comes with acceptance. Congratulations to the entire team. Can’t wait to see it again!
